Secrets of a French Secrétaire Commode
Beneath the marble top, four quarter-veneered kingwood drawers offer ample storage space. Kingwood, known for its rich colour and fine grain, was a favoured material among 19th century craftsmen. The quarter-veneering technique, which involves slicing the wood into thin layers and arranging them in a mirrored pattern, enhancing the visual appeal of the drawers and creating elegant symmetry. Each drawer is further embellished with intricate metal mounts, feature floral motifs and ornate scrollwork, underscoring the attention to detail and artistry characteristic of French antique commodes.

The interior of the top drawer hides a secret on this French commode secretaire. Disguised at the bottom of the commode as a serpentine cross banded frieze is a hidden drawer, fitted neatly between the two front faceted legs of the commode.
