During medieval times in aristocratic homes, meal times were a formal, communal activity in a large hall or room, and it was commonly a portable trestle style table which could be erected for eating and packed away for the room to be used for other purposes. In the smaller well-to-do residences draw-leaf or drop-side tables were popular allowing flexibility to formally entertain larger numbers, with the ability to minimise the table size when not in use.
