antique-lighting

Well considered lighting is a crucial part of any room, and when working with antique lighting the elements that bring it together are important. More often than not, when decorating a space, we can tend to concentrate on the furniture and wall decoration – lighting can sometimes come as an afterthought. However there is no better way to create a statement in an interior than with the use of antique lighting.

For a dining room, living room, bedroom or hallway, an antique pendant or chandelier is the perfect statement of elegance, not to mention, much more likely to be lovely quality. Particularly in rooms with a lack of natural light, they can bring a certain warmth and focal-point to your space. There is a myriad of styles to choose from, whether it be soft and feminine, or a more relaxed affair.

A few of our current favourites are –

french-crystal-chandelier

This 19th century French crystal and iron chandelier is a beautiful model and transforms a room. The combination of clear, oyster and aubergine glass with Baccarat crystals is beautiful and wonderfully unique. We think this chandelier would be magnificent juxtaposed with a French country farmhouse table or simple elegant contemporary dining table.

This strikingly beautiful early 20th century Spanish wrought iron antique chandelier is beautifully made and being oval in form, is ideal over a dining table or in an elongated rectangular space. The piece is in excellent original condition, with ten very well shaped and cast arms with lights. What is particularly lovely about this light is the quality of the bronze work – each element meets the next neatly and crisply and the bronze is very nicely cast.  This would be a stunning focal point for perhaps a dining room or covered external patio – we can visualise this hanging above a country dining table, adorned with soft candlelight, good food and wine – what a gorgeous ambience for your dinner guests! For a more sophisticated look, we also think this fine quality 20th century French brass light with linen shade would set off any glamorous office or library. With its six brass branches and brand new shade this antique lighting creates soft, warm light and highlights the space underneath. Each piece element in this antique light has been neatly pinned rather than welded giving it a lovely quality appearance.

Some rooms however, don’t call for a statement lighting piece. Another effective way to bring more light into a space, is the addition of a carefully placed mirror. Not only just an appealing decorative element, by hanging mirrors on the wall opposite to your windows, they will reflect the natural light and create a brighter, more uplifting atmosphere.
