This beautiful piece is a late 18th century English oak antique dresser base. The original oak plank top above a shaped frieze housing three drawers with original handles supported on four square tapering legs. It is 1930mm long, is 460mm deep and is 850mm high.
The piece would have originally had a plate rack and stood well over 2 metres high. It is quite common to see the plate racks removed, essentially to provide versatility and use in a modern home. And versatile they are – fabulous as both a side table or a sofa table!
More, the beautiful yet subtle feature are numerous – everything from the gorgeous curved apron to the worn edges and the shrunken plank top, this piece oozes character. More, it is this character – these embellishments born from age – which give the piece a level of sophistication. Consequently, it is a piece which will work in a casual setting and a formal setting – again, versatility.
Finally, the understated elegance of this piece of furniture tell us that it is ‘country house’ furniture as opposed to ‘country’. Where it to be country it would be much more plain and rough around the edges – this piece has come from a fine country manor which simply adds to the character and intrigue.
