Important French Parquetry Side Cabinet Stamped Bettenfeld

2243P

Exhibition Quality Cabinet Bettenfeld: A 19th century French cabinet by Bettenfield Paris, the original moulded breakfront marble above a mahogany frieze with ormolu flutes, olive leaves and flowers housing a single drawer over a cupboard with a pair of doors unusually panelled on the front and reverse side, the front with cross-banded parquetry flanked by canted corners and parquetry side panels profusely embellished with ormolu acanthus, roses, olive leaves terminating in stylised ormolu acanthus feet. This cabinet is of remarkable quality both inside and out and is one of the finest pieces Wallrocks have imported in 45 years of trading. The original model of this commode is attributed to Riesener.

Footnote:
The original model of this cabinet was made by Reisner and used in Palais de Fontainebleau, and this cabinet is one of a couple of notable museum quality copies made in the 19th century. Other notable examples include one made by Linke, Sormani, Wassmus, Winckelson and Fourdinois. Founded in 1895 in Paris, Bettenfeld was an accomplished cabinetmaker and exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle as Bettenfeld Quanonne and won silver medal at the same exposition in 1913, furnishing the Palace de Larangerias in Rio de Janiero in 1910, and according to renowned antique expert Christopher Payne, ‘there was a Bettenfeld recorded as working for Francoise Linke circa 1910.’ The book also depicts a very fine cradle made by the cabinetmaker illustrating the remarkable quality of his work.

Circa: 1880
