French Antique Sideboard
19th century French marquetry side cabinet, the shaped white marble top set into a kingwood frieze housing a single inlaid drawer above a pair of marquetry doors with ebonised mouldings flanked by shaped marquetry side panels enclosing a polished cupboard with original shelves, supported on a marquetry plinth on four bun feet all embellished with bronze dore. This cabinet is extraordinary quality and of very unusual design .
Footnote: There is a common misconception that 18th century furniture and ormolu is of superior quality to 19th century. This of course is completely inaccurate as the hand-skills of the 18th century were passed down to makers in the 19th century and honed with the introduction of machinery during the Industrial Revolution. The result that the quality of 19th century furniture could certainly surpass 18th century examples. This cabinet is an exceptional example of 19th century design, cabinetmaking and metalwork. The bronze dore work on this cabinet is not only pierced but finely cast so that one can see through to the cabinetry behind, and the pins have been made as part of the metalwork rather than punch through as separate pieces. The quality is superb.
