19th Century Eastern European Pair of Carved Window Surrounds

Item code: 4034

A pair of antique Siberian carved window surrounds later converted to mirrors. They feature 2 ‘lovebirds’ at the top and open with shutters. These surrounds have become very fashionable in Europe, and those who don’t use them as window surrounds often fit them with mirrors and use them as a feature mirror. Footnote: Featured last year in the Pushkin House London Exhibition – Carved and Coloured Village Art from Tsarist Lands and the first of its kind to be shown in London for over 100 years, the following is one of a pair of beautiful carved Siberian Window Surrounds with their original paintwork, found on our travels. Viewed close up, the texture resulting from centuries of weather is quite incredible. The exhibition was dedicated to bringing attention to folk art pieces across northern and eastern Europe, and particularly from within the Soviet Union. The fall of the Iron Curtain meant that much of this culture was lost to the West. The opening of Russia in the 1990s and its surrounding republics, revealed that interestingly, the Soviet Union had preserved their national cultural traditions.These window surrounds were originally created in the 18th and 19th centuries to imitate the beautiful Baroque architecture seen in St Petersburg and Moscow, which itself borrowed from older vernacular buildings of which little or no record survives. The newly wealthy merchants vied for status by having large log mansions built, with ever more fancy fretwork and carved window surrounds, and it is thought to have been associated with protective magic. Wallrocks only buy antiques that are sound. We are able to do this because we buy them in original condition and it provides the significant advantage of being able to see what has and has not been done to a piece over time. It is to our customers absolute benefit that we do this. It allows us to see, whether the quality or integrity has been compromised?

    Wallrocks have very strict buying criteria…
    - The furniture must be antique, and if not it needs to be of an unsually high standard to justify being purchased;
    - Antiques must be of a very high quality;
    - Our antiques must have correct proportion;
    - Importantly, they must have integrity and aesthetic appeal.

    While these criteria might seem obvious, it is difficult to find furniture that satisfy all of them at once.

    Restoration & Interior Design

    The process of bringing the collection back to life is incredibly exciting for our clients as it respectfully rescues long forgotten beauty, and allows clients to make their own personal mark on the antiques by determining how they are to be restored, to what level and with what finishes and fabrics.
