Japanese Antique Tansu

Item code: B15

A 19th century lacquered Japanese antique tansu, the original lacquered and decorated sides and doors enclosing eight decorated drawers, all supported on a later early 20th century table base. Footnote: Oriental lacquer was unfamiliar to the west until the 14th century, however as far as were aware was not brought in as furniture until as late as the 16th century, European furniture began to be influenced by lacquer in early 17th century, and techniques were employed on Burma, Korea, China and Japan, the process of infinite exactitude, resin from the Rhus Vernicifera is tapped in the same way as rubber from the tree, the resin strained, refined and blended into air tight jars. The quality differs according to the season of tapping, soil and the age of the tree. There may be as many as 300 coats of lacquer applied to an article and then dried in atmosphere of particular temperature and humidity. It is then polished and then the process repeated. The soft wood was expertly dowelled together using wood or bamboo pins, designed to be seen from a low vantage point. The lacquer tree (toxicodendron vernicifluum) native to East Asia, did not survive the long duration of the sea voyage without hardening beyond use. European demand for lacquer was such that the Chinese and Japanese soon began to capitalise on this lucrative market by making lacquered objects specifically for export, in forms and styles to suit Western tastes. This trade was not restricted to China and Japan. Click here to see similar pieces – Cabinets & Sideboards

    Wallrocks only buy antiques that are sound. We are able to do this because we buy them in original condition and it provides the significant advantage of being able to see what has and has not been done to a piece over time. It is to our customers absolute benefit that we do this. It allows us to see, whether the quality or integrity has been compromised?

    Wallrocks have very strict buying criteria…
    - The furniture must be antique, and if not it needs to be of an unsually high standard to justify being purchased;
    - Antiques must be of a very high quality;
    - Our antiques must have correct proportion;
    - Importantly, they must have integrity and aesthetic appeal.

    While these criteria might seem obvious, it is difficult to find furniture that satisfy all of them at once.

    The process of bringing the collection back to life is incredibly exciting for our clients as it respectfully rescues long forgotten beauty, and allows clients to make their own personal mark on the antiques by determining how they are to be restored, to what level and with what finishes and fabrics.
