French Marquetry Side Cabinet

Item code: C30

An exceptional 19th century French marquetry side cabinet, the original shaped white marble top with ormolu moulding supported on a burr walnut and amboyna frieze inlaid with foliate marquetry over a profusely inlaid marquetry panel, the inlay in the form of coloured satinwood and purple-heart flowers, leaves, ribbons, musical instruments and string inlays flanked by a pair of fluted amboyna pilasters and marquetry side panels, enclosing a polished mahogany cupboard with two adjustable shelves. All supported on an inlaid amboyna platform base. This cabinet has recently been restored in our workroom and is ready for delivery. The above is an example of absolute master craftsmanship. When one looks a the details on this cabinet, it is important to look at it from several angles. Quality of materials used, quality of inlay, attention to correct proportion, and overall appeal. Shape & Design: If we focus first on the shape and proportion of the piece, one must imagine the time and skill involved in creating canted, curved timber ends such as you see here. Not only does the high quality carcass mahogany have to be bent to this extreme curve without splitting and cracking the timber, but each veneer for the marquetry must be equally bent and shaped at differing degrees to ensure that the overall effect is flush. Then the craftsman must be sure that none of these inlays will move back to their original form over time. Materials: Most of the materials used to make this cabinet are no longer available, and even if they were, their value is so great, and the time that it would take any manufacturer to achieve this level of quality, would push the cabinet into the realms of completely unaffordable. A solid polished mahogany carcass has been used, and all over veneered and inlaid with the finest quality amboyna, satinwood, ebony, burr walnut and the list goes on with fabulous quality bronze and brass mounts applied. Wallrocks only buy antiques that are sound. We are able to do this because we buy them in original condition and it provides the significant advantage of being able to see what has and has not been done to a piece over time. It is to our customers absolute benefit that we do this. It allows us to see, whether the quality or integrity has been compromised?

    Wallrocks have very strict buying criteria…
    - The furniture must be antique, and if not it needs to be of an unsually high standard to justify being purchased;
    - Antiques must be of a very high quality;
    - Our antiques must have correct proportion;
    - Importantly, they must have integrity and aesthetic appeal.

    While these criteria might seem obvious, it is difficult to find furniture that satisfy all of them at once.
