Dining tables have evolved over many centuries, with the word ‘table’ derived from the latin ‘tabula’ meaning a plank, board or flat space. Nowadays, they often symbolise a place in the home where families can meet and interact, and are a gathering place for friends and family to share good food and good conversation – the true heart of a home.
During medieval times in aristocratic homes, meal times were a formal, communal activity in a large hall or room, and it was commonly a portable trestle style table which could be erected for eating and packed away for the room to be used for other purposes. Large solid plank tables were often used more as serving or refectory table rather than to sit around. In the smaller well-to-do residences draw-leaf or drop-side tables were popular allowing flexibility to formally entertain larger numbers, with the ability to minimise the table size when not in use.
As a general rule, antique dining tables have since become smaller and more decorative and Wallrocks has a constantly evolving collection offering a good variety of options. Please browse the collection on our website and contact us with any enquiries.
