Footnote: Gustav III reigned within Sweden from 1772 – 1792, and while the Gustavian style predates his reign, he became a patriot for the visual arts and was considered responsible for the proliferation of the style during this period. The early Gustavian style was dominated and influenced by neoclassical and later bore strong Italian influences after the excavation of Pompei. Gustav spent two years in France from 1770, where he developed a taste for neo-classical design. The early designs were strongly influenced by the Louis XVI style, although could also be said to have Dutch, German and even English influences as well.
