Fine 19th Century English Carlton House Desk: Fine quality 19th century large English free-standing Sheraton Revival Carlton House desk, the crescent shaped upper selected fiddleback satinwood cabinet with pierced brass gallery profusely inlaid with shells, flowers, leaves and musical instruments accentuated with fine pen-work houses four inlaid doors enclosing cupboards flanked by sets of three graduated drawers above a leathered desktop over a desk with central drawer flanked by two pairs of drawers inlaid and retaining original brass handles all supported on four square tapering inlaid legs. The table is freestanding and has been inlaid on all four sides so that it can be admired from every angle.
Condition: This is a fabulous quality Carlton House desk in excellent original condition. The inlays are sound and handles original and the piece would benefit tremendously from gentle cleaning and re-polishing by hand, which is inclusive in the price and done by Wallrocks restoration team of over 40 years experience.
History of the Carlton House Desk: This beautiful type of desk, ‘The Carlton House Desk’, was originally designed by the Prince of Wales (later King George IV) for his Carlton House residence in London in the late 18th century. The style was popularised at the time by Hepplewhite and Sheraton.
