Antique Bureau à Cylindre: Fine 19th century French Louis XVI bureau à cylindre the marble top with pierced brass gallery over a canted string inlaid pediment supported on a cross-banded geometric parqutry frame flanking a cylinder inlaid with flowers and leaves which opens to reveal a sliding adjustable desktop and three inlaid ormolu mounted drawers above a set of three parquetry inlaid drawers all raised on four square tapering inlaid legs terminating with ormolu mounts in the form of acanthus leaves.
Footnote: Hidden in one of the little drawers of this bureau, was a newspaper clipping titled ‘Post Office and the Blackout – Early Posting Appeal to the Public’. This article remains inside the bureau and a small section is detailed below and attached in the gallery of images here.
‘…arrangements have recently been overhauled with a view to providing services which can be maintained during the winter months under black-out conditions, and which it is hoped will suffer no more than incidental disturbance in the event of enemy action, when this action is unusually violent…’
