19th Century French Provincial Farmhouse Dining Table
French Provincial Farmhouse Dining Table: A good quality 19th century French Provincial farmhouse dining table. The original pitch pine plank top supported on four square tapering elm legs with chamfered corners all joined by a pitch pine frieze. The legs have been tipped as is normal for original tables due to them absorbing water when sitting on flagstone floors. Note: This table is wooden pegged and a careful perusal of the relevant photo will show that the pegs (dowels) are not round, but faceted and protrude from the surrounding timber. This is substantial prima facie evidence that the table is original and shows that the dowels were hand made rather than machine made and have shrunk less than the surrounding timber on account of their being end-grain whereas the surrounding timber is long-grain. Timber shrinks very little along its end grain and when this table was originally made these dowels would have been flush with the surrounding timber.
