Our compendium of antique tables ranges from the smallest side table, to a 4.5 meter imperial action table – from the provincial and naive to the extravagantly formal there is a design of table to suit most tastes. Many pieces have decorative marquetry or parquetry inlay, and some are further embellished with fine ormolu mounts. Others have a simple elegance with their fine lines and delicate carvings.
Along with the humble chair, the table is probably one of the earliest forms of furniture and it has certainly proven to be one of the most versatile. Although many of the designs date back centuries, the basic structure and use has not changed significantly and most are still seen today amongst both antique tables and modern versions of the same.
A demi-lune table, for example refers to the shape of the top, translating from French to mean “half moon”. An étagère refers to the French word meaning a small set of shelves to display ornaments. An étagère table commonly has two or three shelves, some of which can fold away. The Sorrento table references the origin of the table design in Italy.
